Movie time and saying goodbye!

One week ago, I became a scriptwriter, actor, and video producer. As part of my Communicating Science module, a few of my peers and I stepped into the roles of filmmakers for a short science video production. It was an interesting experience, filled with excitement and fun. Most of all, I enjoyed the script-writing part. Crafting meaningful, clear content was definitely my favourite aspect, and working as a team was a lot of fun.

I think our video turned out well — interesting and enjoyable to watch. We chose a topic about dementia and dementia prevention, something that most people, regardless of age, have probably come into contact with.

However, I realised that editing is a science in its own right. I would say this was the area of our video with the most potential for improvement. Some other videos in my course were better at creating playful, smooth transitions between shots and framing their content with suitable background music. Editing would therefore be my focus next time, because content alone is not enough to create a captivating science video. Videos have the power to catch people’s attention through both content and visual elements, making them easy and appealing to watch.

As my current studies are coming to an end, I am reflecting especially on my Communicating Science module. I am now very happy to have chosen it, and I am grateful for the two motivated and inspiring lecturers who accompanied us on this journey into such an important and fascinating area. My expectations and hopes were met. I became more confident in public speaking, and I deepened my love of and skills in scientific and medical writing. I will definitely continue on this path with joy and excitement.
